On September 10, 2022, at 12:36 a.m., Bellingham Police Department (BPD) officers investigated a collision resulting in the death of a pedestrian in the 1600 block of Lakeway Drive.  The investigation showed Jacob M. Saville, 36, Bellingham, drove his Ford F150 off the roadway, fatally struck a pedestrian, and knocked over a light pole. Saville was arrested for vehicular homicide and booked into the Whatcom County Jail.

BPD officers were sent to the 1600 block of Lakeway Drive for a collision at approximately 12:36 a.m. and found Saville’s Ford 150, heavily damaged against a broken light pole.  Witnesses saw Saville get out of the truck shortly after the collision.  Officers found the severely injured male in his 40’s and Bellingham Fire Department personnel pronounced the man deceased at the scene.  Identification of the deceased pedestrian is pending notification of next of kin.

The preliminary investigation showed that Saville was under the influence of intoxicating liquor and probable cause for vehicular homicide was established.  After being released from the hospital, Saville was booked into the Whatcom County Jail.

BPD Crime Scene Investigators and Traffic Officers were called in to investigate the collision scene. Lakeway Drive remained closed from Puget Street to Woburn Street overnight and into midafternoon, to complete the collision investigation and have the light pole removed from the roadway.
