Bloedel Donovan beach to reopen Tuesday afternoon

Bacteria levels back to safe recreational standards

September 17, 2024 - by Riley Grant, Public Works Communications

The City of Bellingham is pleased to announce that Bloedel Donovan swimming beach will reopen to the public by 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, following a sewage spill that occurred on September 11.

Recent water quality testing has confirmed that bacteria levels in the lake have returned to safe levels for recreational use. The beach will be open to the public for swimming, hand launching boats, and other activities. Visit the Whatcom County Health and Community Services website for public health information about lake and beach recreation.

There are still no impacts to our drinking water, see the September 12 news release for additional information.

The City would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding during the temporary closure.
