Rainier Avenue Bridge Replacement (Chuckanut Creek)

Project Overview

The Rainier Avenue Bridge Replacement Project (ER017) aims to develop a long-term solution for the temporary bridge installed after the original bridge on Rainier Avenue over Chuckanut Creek was washed out during the November 2021 floods.

Project Status (Summer 2025)

After conducting a thorough analysis of permanent solutions and their feasibility, the City is moving forward with plans to construct a permanent replacement bridge on Rainier Avenue over Chuckanut Creek.

Timeline

  • December 2021: Initiated a quick feasibility study to determine funding needs.
  • June 2022: Budgeted for a formal feasibility study in the 2023-2028 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).
  • Late 2022: Contracted a consultant to conduct a formal feasibility study.
  • January – June 2023: Completed the formal feasibility study.
  • Current: City confirmed plans to replace the temporary bridge installed over Chuckanut Creek in the 2026-2031 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP)
  • Future (Fall 2025): City will begin the design phase and permitting process
  • Summer 2027: Construction of bridge replacement tentatively planned for Summer 2027, depending on permitting

Funding

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has confirmed funding for this project. The project is listed as funded in the Six-Year 2026-2031 Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP).
