Rainier Avenue Bridge Replacement (Chuckanut Creek)

Project Overview ER 017

This project aims to develop a long-term solution for the temporary bridge installed after the original bridge on Rainier Avenue over Chuckanut Creek was washed out during the November 2021 floods.

Project Status (October 2024)

We are currently conducting a thorough analysis of permanent solutions and their feasibility. This analysis will consider environmental impact, long-term costs, and resident access. We will present a detailed plan with multiple options to the City Council in the future.

Timeline

  • December 2021: Initiated a quick feasibility study to determine funding needs.
  • June 2022: Budgeted for a formal feasibility study in the 2023-2028 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).
  • Late 2022: Contracted a consultant to conduct a formal feasibility study.
  • January – June 2023: Completed the formal feasibility study.
  • Current: Evaluating options based on the feasibility study and resident input.
  • Future (dates TBD): Public presentation of options, council decision, permitting process, design, construction.

Additional Information

  • Community Engagement: We are committed to keeping residents informed and involved throughout the process. We will host a public meeting in 2025 to present the options and gather feedback before moving forward.
  • Goal: Our goal is to find a solution that balances the needs of our whole community, impacted residents, flooding and sea level rise, fish passage, and long-term resilience.

Funding

The amount and type of project funding will be determined once the feasibility study is complete.
