Completion Requirements for Youth Level 1

  1. Enter and Exit Water Safely
    • Students must enter and exit safely using ladder, steps or side.
  2. Blow Bubbles through Mouth and Nose
    • Students must blow bubbles underwater for at least three seconds.
  3. Bobbing – 3 Times
    • Students will exhale while submerged and inhale when they are above water.
  4. Open Eyes and Recover an Object
    • Students must recover a submerged object with eyes open underwater at least two times.
  5. Front Glide & Recover – 2 Body Lengths
    • With support, students must extend arms forward, put face into the water and push off the bottom, into a horizontal position.
  6. Back Glide – 2 Body Lengths
    • With support, students will put arms at their sides, head back with ears in the water and push off the wall into a horizontal position.
  7. Back Float and Recover – 3 Seconds
    • With assistance, students must remain motionless with arms extended, body fairly flat, and stomach at the surface.
    • Students must be able to recover to standing position with support.
  8. Roll Over
    • Students roll over from front to back with support.
    • Students roll over from back to front with support.
  9. Explore Treading Water Arms
    • Students will explore different arm and hand movements in chest deep water with support.
  10. Alternating Legs on Front with Support – 2 Body Lengths
    • Students must propel themselves 2 body lengths using alternating legs while supported by instructor or equipment.
  11. Simultaneous Legs on Front with Support – 2 Body Lengths
    • Students must propel themselves 2 body lengths using simultaneous legs while supported by instructor or equipment.
  12. Alternating Arms on Front with Support – 2 Body Lengths
    • Students must propel themselves 2 body lengths using alternating arms while supported by instructor or equipment.
  13. Simultaneous Arms on Front with Support – 2 Body Lengths
    • Students must propel themselves 2 body lengths using simultaneous arms while supported by instructor or equipment.
  14. Swim on Front with Support – 2 Body Lengths
    • Students must propel themselves 2 body lengths using any combination of arms and legs while supported by instructor or equipment.
  15. Alternating Legs on Back with Support – 2 Body Lengths
    • Students must propel themselves 2 body lengths using alternating legs while supported by instructor or equipment.
  16. Simultaneous Legs on Back with Support – 2 Body Lengths
    • Students must propel themselves 2 body lengths using simultaneous legs while supported by instructor or equipment.
  17. Alternating Arms on Back with Support – 2 Body Lengths
    • Students must propel themselves 2 body lengths using alternating arms while supported by instructor or equipment.
  18. Simultaneous Arms on Back with Support – 2 Body Lengths
    • Students must propel themselves 2 body lengths using simultaneous arms while supported by instructor or equipment.
  19. Swim on Back with Support – 2 Body Lengths
    • Student must propel themselves 2 body lengths using any combination of arms and legs while supported by instructor or equipment.
  20. Water Safety Topics
    • Staying Safe Around Water
    • Too Much Sun is No Fun
    • Don’t Just Pack It, Wear Your Jacket – Demonstrate wearing a life jacket
    • Recognize the Lifeguards
    • Recognize an Emergency
    • How to Call for Help – Demonstrate getting the lifeguard’s attention or an adult’s and know 911.
  21. Exit Skill I
    • Student will enter the water unassisted, move 5 yards, bob 3 times and then safely exit the water.
    • Students may move by walking, wall crawling, or swimming.
  22. Exit Skill II
    • Students will glide on front 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 3 seconds and recover to vertical position.
    • All of these skills are done with assistance and support.
