This project is a priority for public access to the waterfront and is identified in Phase One of the Waterfront District Interlocal Agreement for Facilities. This project will also help meet the objectives of the 2014 Park, Recreation and Open Space Plan
The north Railroad Avenue Trail bridge crossing Whatcom Creek between York and Ellis Streets caught fire on Friday, November 23, 2012. The old creosote-treated structure was removed and replaced with a new, clear-span bridge.
This project included clearing and grading for the meadow area shown in the City Council approved 2008 Master Plan. A new loop trail was constructed around the cleared meadow.
The Boulevard Park shoreline was eroding away as a result of ineffective shoreline armoring. Improvements included removing concrete rubble along the shoreline, creating sand and gravel beaches and rock revetments.
The artificial turf at Civic Stadium, installed in 2000, exceeded its lifespan and needed to be replaced for both safety and playability in 2013.
