This project (EU188) will replace the aging emergency power generators at the Post Point Wastewater Treatment Plant. These generators provide essential backup power during outages or service disruptions, ensuring the facility can continue treating wastewater and protecting the environment without interruption, even during unexpected power outages.
The City installed the current generators in the early 1990s during a major plant upgrade that added secondary treatment facilities. While City Staff have diligently maintained the equipment, the generator units, switchgear, and control systems have exceeded their expected service life. Replacement parts are now difficult to source, and reliability is increasingly at risk.
The City has determined that routine replacement of these critical systems is necessary to maintain uninterrupted Wastewater Treatment operations at Post Point. Fulfilling this responsibility is essential for the City of Bellingham to protect public health and preserve environmental quality.
Project Status – 2026
The City of Bellingham initiated project design and permitting in 2023 and completed these steps in 2025. The construction contract has now been awarded and we expect the new generator to be delivered in late 2026, which is when installation work at the plant will begin.
