In October 2014, the Bellingham City Council approved the Bellingham Bicycle Master Plan. The Plan identifies steps toward creating a safe, connected network of bicycle facilities and supportive programs to encourage bicycling by all members of our community. In June 2019, Bellingham won the Governor’s Smart Community Award for Rapid Implementation of the Bicycle Master Plan and in December 2020, the League of American Bicyclists promoted Bellingham from Silver to Gold Bicycle Friendly Community – 1 of only 2 in Washington State and 1 of only 34 in the United States.
