- Enter water using ladder, steps or side
- Student must be able to safely and independently enter the water other than walking in on the beach.
- Exit water using ladder steps or side
- Student must be able to safely and independently exit the water other than walking out on the beach.
- Submerge mouth, nose, and eyes
- Student must be comfortable with their mouth, nose and eyes underwater.
- Blow bubbles through mouth and nose, 3 seconds
- Student must be comfortably able to exhale bubbles through both mouth and nose.
- Front float & recovery with support, 3 seconds
- Student must remain comfortably prone with their face in the water.
- Student must remain relaxed throughout the float.
- They may use the instructor, the wall, or any floatation device for support.
- Back float and recovery with support, 3 seconds
- Student must remain comfortably supine in the water.
- Student must remain relaxed throughout the float.
- They may use the instructor, the floor, or any floatation device for support.
- Flutter kick on front with support
- Student must be able to move their legs in an alternating motion.
- A bicycle kick is still acceptable.
- The kick must provide some propulsion through the water.
- Flutter kick on back with support
- Student must be able to move their legs in an alternating motion.
- A bicycle kick is still acceptable.
- The kick must provide some propulsion through the water.
- Alternating arm action on front with support, 5 feet
- Student must demonstrate moving their arms independently in an alternating circular motion.
- The arms must rotate forward in a rough crawl stroke motion.
- Student may walk, crawl, or be supported by the instructor or equipment.
- Discuss water safety rules
- Discuss pool rules such as running, showering, etc.
- Talk about never swimming alone or “Always swim with a buddy in a supervised area.”
- Discuss how to get help
- Discuss or practice calling for help and who they could get help from.
