- Swim underwater, 6 feet
- Student must fully submerge and then swim underwater 6 feet.
- The student may not surface within those 6 feet.
- Feet first surface dive
- Student starts off by treading water and then uses a strong scissors or breaststroke kick to rise out of the water.
- Student should remain in a streamline position until they begin to slow down. Then he/she should press up to continue their descent.
- Survival float, 30 seconds
- Students must float with face in the water and bubbles.
- Student’s arms should press down to lift their head in the water and then immediately go relaxed again.
- Front crawl, 10 yards
- The student’s body must be at less then 30 degree angle with some rudimentary body roll.
- Students may have some side to side motion in the trunk and legs.
- The student’s arms should come out of the water.
- Students may have straight arm recovery.
- Students should have a good flutter kick. An occasional bicycle kick is acceptable.
- The student’s face must be in the water unless taking a breath.
- Students may breathe to the front or the side as needed.
- Breaststroke kick with support, 5 yards
- The kick must provide good propulsion.
- The feet must go outside of the knees prior to the power phase.
- Butterfly, 10 feet
- The body may be up to 30 degrees from the surface but the face must be in the water.
- The arms must recover above the water but may exit the water above the waist.
- The legs may bend at the knees during up beat and the feet may break the surface occasionally.
- The stroke must have the basic form.
- Back Crawl, 10 yards
- The student’s body must be at less then 30 degree angle with some rudimentary body roll.
- The student’s ears may be out of the water, their chin on their chest, and their bodies may be bent at the hip.
- Students may have some side to side motion in their trunk and legs.
- The student’s arms should come out of the water.
- Arms may be straight during the power phase.
- Students should have a good flutter kick. An occasional bicycle kick is acceptable.
- Students may occasionally hold their breath.
- Elementary backstroke kick with support, 5 yards
- The kick must provide good propulsion.
- The feet must go outside of the knees prior to the power phase.
- Scissors kick on side with support, 5 feet
- The body must be on its side.
- The bottom arm must extend over head with the top arm against the side. There is no arm stroke.
- Must have a rudimentary scissors kick.
- Any type of breathing pattern is acceptable.
- Sitting or kneeling dive
- Student must enter the water with their head between their arms.
- Student must enter the water head first.
- Open turn on front
- Student must demonstrate using any stroke on the front, turn at the wall, and then glide two body lengths before stroking.
- Open turn on back
- Student must demonstrate using any stroke on the back, turn at the wall, and then glide two body lengths before stroking.
- Discuss rules for safe diving
- Discuss “Learn to dive properly from a qualified instructor.”
- Discuss “Obey all posted rules and no diving signs.”
- Discuss “Never dive in shallow water or into above-ground pools.”
- PFD: Compact jump from a height
- Student should cross arms and hold the neck of their PFD as they enter the water.
- Student should cross their legs as they enter the water.
- Reaching assist
- Student need to brace themselves on the deck and reach out with an arm to grasp the victim. Then they need to pull them to safety.
- Discuss how to use equipment.
- Throwing assist
- The student must demonstrate a throwing assist.
