Southwest side of Lake Padden past Padden Creek outlet between trail markers 1.5 and 2 miles.
Description
Away from the lake shoreline into forest riparian zone. Deep shady area with a forest floor layer (decomposing leaves, dead trees), understory layer (groundcovers, bushes, shrubs, young trees) and canopy (tall mature trees).
Habitat Value
Forest provides habitat for large mammals including Black Bear and Mule Deer. Small mammals and birds use forest floor and understory layer as safe cover, nesting sites and sources of food. Forest canopy provides tall perches for Bald Eagles and Red-tailed Hawks.

Seasonal Changes
During winter the leaves and twigs of the understory layer of shrubs, small trees and groundcover fall to forest floor. This plant debris enriches the forest floor and serves as winter cover for the roots of plants that will emerge in the early spring. Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar and Sword Fern provide winter cover and sources of food for birds and other wildlife.
Creating a Wildlife Habitat in Your Yard
Use all levels of vegetation (groundcovers, shrubs, trees) as safe cover and nesting spots for birds. Plant native plants that have flowers and berries to serve as food sources for wildlife. Retain pockets of leaves and plant debris as cover for birds and small mammals.
