With the winter weather truly upon us, and road conditions constantly changing throughout the day, driving can be especially challenging.

This driver did not take the road conditions into consideration today while driving and lost control of their car, crashing into the raised walkway on Fraser Street. Thankfully no one was injured!

Please -
❄️Slow down, road surfaces can change from wet to ice quickly.
❄️Leave more space between you and the car in front of you.
❄️Be aware of pedestrians, especially kids.

Parents of kids using the walkway on Fraser, please be aware this will be closed until the city can assess the damage and repair it!

Highlighting a few investigations conducted by patrol over the past week:

Early Thursday morning (just past midnight,) Jan 30th, officers were sent to call where a male was passed out behind the wheel in the middle of the intersection. A witness knocked on the window and the male drove off. The patrol officers coming into the area saw the Silver Passat at James and Kentucky and pulled the driver over. As the primary officer spoke with the driver, the cover officer noted ammunition laying on the passenger floorboard. The driver was asked to get out of the car, at which point the cover officer saw the grip of a firearm. Further investigation revealed the driver is prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous convictions and he was in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine. The gun was recovered and booked into evidence. The driver went to jail for unlawful possession of a firearm, failing to have an ignition interlock device, possession of a controlled substance and driving while license suspended.

BPD patrol has investigated three separate hit and run collisions where a motorist struck a pedestrian and fled the scene without stopping. In two of the collisions, the pedestrians sustained serious injuries, and in the third there were minor injuries. One of the collisions is still under investigation, while the other two have been solved and the motorists identified and arrested.

The initial investigations were conducted by patrol shifts who collected evidence and tried to identify the vehicles and drivers. For two of the investigations, one of our traffic officers went to work the next day on his patrol shift and was able to gather more information which led to confirming the identity of the motorists and resolution to the cases. Great collaboration between the evening/night shifts and our day shift CSIs and Traffic Officer!

We are asking motorists to be cautious when making turns, to ensure there are no pedestrians in the cross walks. Please slow down and remain vigilant for pedestrians and cyclists as they share the roadway. This will be especially important with the snow in the forecast. Slow down, leave more space, and watch for people walking or cycling.

Bellingham Police Patrol Division has arrested 11 more DUI drivers since the last post. Now we are only 28 days into January and there have been 40 arrests! Those arrests include a person who decided it was ok to do burnouts through downtown at bar closing time.

This behavior attracted the attention of two officers downtown already looking for impaired drivers. They found the Mercury Grand Marquis still driving recklessly and fishtailing through the street on Railroad Av.

One of the officers positioned his patrol car in such a way to block the driver of the car from crashing into innocent people walking on the sidewalks and to get him to stop. Instead, the driver sped up and 'drifted' right through the intersection. The officers got behind with lights on, the universal signal for drivers to pull over. He disregarded this signal and did not pull over and instead continued to speed crashing into a parked car (thankfully it was unoccupied) and damaging it heavily.

The driver, by now having nearly hit both officers and crashing into a parked car, fled on Chestnut going the wrong way for a block. He continued to flee, lost control of his car, drifted into the oncoming lane and crashed into the traffic barrier between Bay St and Granary Ave. With a heavily damaged car, the driver continued to speed away (70 mph in a 35-mph zone) on Roeder. As he was fleeing the officers saw both front tires fly off the car, one at a time. Even this did not stop the driver. He continued flee until he could no longer control the two front wheels and crashed into the railroad tracks at Roeder Av and Coho Way. He and his passenger got out of the car and were greeted by the pursuing officers. The passenger fled on foot, later caught by other officers. The driver got out of the car and was arrested. After a medical check and DUI processing, he was booked into jail.

He was booked into the jail for the following:
Attempting to elude a police vehicle
Driving under the influence
Hit and run
Reckless endangerment
Reckless driving
Driving while license suspended

The danger this driver posed to innocent bystanders, the officers, his passenger, and himself is staggering. We are grateful this incident did not end in injury or death to anyone.

BPD Patrol Officers, keep up the good work of finding and arresting impaired drivers! Superbowl weekend is coming up and many agencies, BPD included, will have extra DUI patrols out. There is plenty of time to make arrangements for a sober driver or alternate plans to get home. No excuse to drive impaired.

We are 22 days into January, and BPD officers have already arrested 29 DUI drivers! That is more DUI arrests than days in this year! BPD officers are working hard to keep the streets safe and are actively looking for impaired drivers. We have four officers with two DUI arrests each, one has arrested three DUIs and our high achiever has arrested five DUIs so far. A reminder to make plans for a sober driver, otherwise you may end up waking up in the Whatcom County Jail.

Since the start of the year, BPD officers have cited 17 people for use or possession of a controlled substance. Several of these citations were issued by our Bike Team since January 7th.

Three additional people have gone to jail for possession with intent to deliver (a felony.) BPD patrol officers have been working on some drug investigations which led to the following items being seized:
- approximately 112 grams of fentanyl
- approximately 17 grams of meth
- $2776 in US currency
Two of the people arrested were found slumped over behind the wheel of their respective running cars and the third was arrested for another drug crime and more drugs were found on him.

Our Blue Team evening shift did some great work after receiving a tip from a resident about a stolen E-bike being sold on a social media site. The resident noted immediately the E-bike was worth several thousand dollars and called us because it was being advertised for a low price. The shift got together, developed a plan, which included setting up a meet with the seller.

When the seller arrived, stolen E-bike in hand, he contacted his "buyer." He was immediately shocked to see several officers arrive and greet him rather than the person he was expecting. The officers recovered the E-bike and brought it back to the very happy owner. The 'seller' ended is ill-fated quest by landing in jail. Lesson here is do not deal in stolen property on social media, you attract attention to yourself. And furthermore, you just never know who is on the other end of your text......could be the PD! Well done, Blue Team, and thank you to the resident who called us with the tip!

How do you guys safely dispose of the controlled substances? I can’t imagine you just throw them in your dumpster 🤣

Great work, everyone!

Today is #SaferInternetDay and we are sharing a message about protecting our youth online. If you are a parent/guardian, educator and child protection professional, we urge you to #StartTheConversation about safe technology use.

Some Bellingham PD detectives are part of the Washington Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (WA ICAC TF), which is a multi-jurisdictional group of agencies dedicated to fighting the online exploitation of children. Today they are all asking us to talk about how to keep youth safer online.

The Online Child Exploitation Prevention Initiative (OCEPI) created best practices as an easy guide for any front-line professional working with children to help ensure a child’s safety online. See below for links to more information.
