During yesterday's (4/26/2024) early morning hours, Bellingham Police Officers were made aware of an active theft at a local utility company that uses a security monitoring company. The company could see a man wearing a high-visibility reflective vest stealing wire spools from inside the fenced area. He was then seen rolling a spool down Carolina St. The first officer attempted to contact the suspect as he walked back toward the point of entry for the burglary. The suspect ran when the officer called out. The officer watched the suspect cross I5 and radioed other officers information on where they could intercept him. Another BPD officer found the suspect popping out of a bush on Lincoln St. near the I5 a short time later. The suspect again took off running when law enforcement told him to stop, but our officer caught up with the suspect on the 2300 block of Lincoln when he tripped over a retaining wall. The suspect was arrested on probable cause for Burglary in the second degree x 2, Malicious Mischief, Theft in the second degree, and resisting arrest. The stolen spool of wire the man took for a walk down Carolina St was recovered on Moore St. where it was stashed near a tree.
