Bellingham Resource Survey & Inventory Projects

Historic resource surveys are an important planning tool that help create a foundation of information by identifying, recording and evaluating potential historic properties and districts which provide baseline information that can help inform planning decisions and support City policy goals.

City planners and the general public use survey data to inform neighborhood plan updates, urban village plans, zoning decisions and plan approval, environmental review and SEPA, cultural heritage, tourism, historic register designation and disaster response.

Sehome Neighborhood Survey

In 2013, the City of Bellingham received a $15,000 grant from the State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) to complete a survey and inventory of historic resources in the Sehome Neighborhood. The project involved completing inventory forms (reconnaissance level) and taking photographs of approximately 450 properties in the Sehome Neighborhood.

Central Business District (Downtown) Survey

In 2012, the City of Bellingham received a $10,000 grant from the State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) to complete a survey and inventory of historic resources in the CBD Neighborhood (now known as City Center Neighborhood). The project involved completing inventory forms (reconnaissance level) and taking photographs of approximately 450 properties in the CBD Neighborhood, as well as portions of the Sehome and Sunnyland Neighborhoods.

Cornwall Park Survey

In 2011, the City of Bellingham was awarded a grant from the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) to hire a consultant team to complete a historic resource survey of the “Broadway Park” area of the Cornwall Park Neighborhood. The grant proposal also included the nomination of the Broadway Park Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places.

2007-2009 Preserve America Historic Resource Survey and Inventory Project:
Lettered Streets | York | South Hill

Three neighborhoods (Lettered Streets, South Hill and York) were selected to take part in the 2007-2009 Preserve America Historic Resource Survey and Inventory Project. Historic Preservation Northwest performed the grant work. The grant proposal also included the nomination of three historic districts (Cissna Cottages, South Hill and York) to the National Register of Historic Places.
