With SeaFeast on Saturday and heading into Climate Action Week, events around the community may impact travel, as could a number of street and construction projects. The County has several road projects underway as well. Please travel with care and patience.
Padden Creek improvements – 24th to 30th streets
Construction is wrapping up on a habitat improvement project along Padden Creek between the confluence of Connelly Creek and the upstream footbridge. Crews will be removing construction access along Old Fairhaven Parkway and driving lanes will be shifted when that work is done. Two-way traffic will be maintained and the Connelly Creek trail remains open. The project will create and enhance existing wetlands, add complexity to the stream habitat and will remove invasive plant species. Little Squalicum Estuary
Construction crews continue excavation for the estuary habitat project at Little Squalicum Park. Crews and equipment will access the site from Lindbergh Drive and are excavating for culvert installation and removing material from the site. Trails in the project vicinity are closed and there is currently limited beach access. The Park will remain open on the land side of Marine Drive, with access from Bellingham Technical College and West Illinois Street. City Operations Center – Pacific and Carolina streets
The City’s new Operations Center and vehicle barn should be complete within months. The Ops Center building siding is nearly done, with washrooms, door and window trim being done. The vehicle barn roof is under way as windows, overhead doors, plumbing and heating are being installed. The section of Nevada Street between Carolina and Virginia streets remains closed due to construction but the sidewalk is open. Sanitary sewer rehab – Whatcom Creek
The block of Railroad Avenue between York and Champion is closed to through traffic until late September to allow for bypass piping. Access to this parking remains available from either end. At times, bypass and sewer rehabilitation work will require closure and detouring of a portion of the Whatcom Creek trail and may include short-term impacts to traffic on James Street or Meador Avenue south of the creek. West Cemetery Creek water quality improvements
The installation of sediment control-and-capture structures in the creek bed is complete. Outfall repair work is beginning at Lakeway Drive, which means drivers can expect some lane closures and delays westbound on Lakeway. Mill Avenue overlay

WSDOT recommends planning ahead, as work continues along I-5. Real-time traffic information is available via WSDOT traffic app or the WSDOT north Twitter feed.
